The Eternal Student

12 04 2008

Around this time last year I was finishing up my senior year of college. As I sat in class, surrounded by colleagues celebrating the end of their formal educations, many questions floated around in my head: Do I really need any more education? Should I just get a job like everyone else? Can I survive another 15 months of school?

In the end, I took a leap of faith and enrolled in IMC — and haven’t looked back. My undergrad education gave me a strong foundation, but IMC provides a real-world skill set and perspective that gives me confidence to jump into a wide range of careers, from advertising to brand management to database marketing. Guest speakers and client projects give me experience and an inside look at possible careers without being trapped into a job that doesn’t fit me. The greatest thing about being one of the youngest IMC students is that I learn so much from everyone – professors and classmates alike. Everyone brings something different to the program, whether it be their work experience or a fresh perspective like mine.

People ask me if I’m experiencing “academic burnout.” Although the program is grueling, I think about the advantages I have. I don’t know what 9 to 5 is- I’m used to work following me home every day and staying up late to finish school projects. I actually remember (ok, somewhat remember) the stats and finance courses I’d previously taken. And I can’t miss a salary I never had!

Choosing to go to grad school is a very personal decision- it all depends on your educational and internship experience, motivation, stamina and passion.

In eight months my career as a student will finally end, but I’m excited and confident that my first “real” job will be a great one thanks to IMC!
